Perfection. They have no peers.
For this well traveled food aficionado, I’m stunned that nothing can top Suhring with respect to fine dining. For perspective, our top 3 had been Single Thread, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, and The French Laundry- for some time- none of them being slouches and all well deserving for the top crown in their own right.
After being seated at the chefs counter, front row for the show, we were presented with a menu that was embodied as a present. After unwrapping the present, we were thinking- “oh no, it’s too much food”- we really just wanted a short dinner without a multi-hour journey. Fortunately we came to our senses and stuck with the chefs plan and handled the entire 15-course meal. I also mentioned last second that I’m not a fan of seaweed, ‘and don’t make a big deal of it’- I honestly didn’t anticipate German food would have seaweed so didn’t message ahead. Evidently there is seaweed scattered amongst German dishes! They were able to change numerous elements on the fly to accommodate and I’m still stunned that every bite was delicious and I didn’t get any negativity about being unable to adjust. Amazing pivot.
As for the food. We were asked, “what dish was your favorite?” The better question would have been, “what was your least favorite?” Out of the 15 dishes we enjoyed, only 1 was questionable (Brathering & Chervil)- and even then- it wasn’t show stopping.
Our favorite? It’s a mix of Leek, Garden Peas, Enleta, Scallop, Wagyu, and the desserts. It’s hard to name a favorite when every course was amazing- but these stood out.
I opted into the Prestige wine pairing. I always go for the upper echelon pairing and after so many times of hearing, “we source our… from… because…” which are just excuses for mediocre wines, it was refreshing to see hitters on this list like Mouton-Rothschild. In fact, when the sommelier came to explain this particular vineyard, they somehow knew that we had visited there previously and actually allowed us to share our views and some very interesting insights we had learned on our visit- a very unique situation we were happy to be part of.

Needless to say, the wine pairing was one for the books. I actually ended dinner purchasing a bottle of fantastic dessert Riesling recommended by the sommelier, along with being gifted Schnapps along the way at the end. When they left the Schnapps bottle and said, “I won’t look if you pour yourself another glass or two…”- you knew we were simply having fun at that point.
There is also a non-alcoholic pairing. We did not partake this time.
With respect to service- stellar. The service team was exemplary and we felt like we were the only people in the restaurant at times with such attentive service. They also knew we were going to take iPhone pictures and staged items and politely disappeared without prompting. Other restaurants tend to look at this as a nuisance- they seemed to embrace it.
There wasn’t anything lacking… even when I mentioned that I’d love to be allowed to choose our own knife for the entree- they brought out a box of hand made knives from Mexico, Spain, and Germany. This may have helped push them over the edge during our debate of best restaurant in the world.
And while I’m sure they don’t indulge everyone, the twin brothers/chefs were kind enough to speak with us for a few minutes during the rush and take a picture. We will cherish that memory.
With respect to price, US$300/person for the menu and we added on the extras like Beluga caviar (US$150-350, depending on the amount) along with “Spatzle & Truffle” (US$75). I felt US$300 for the Prestige wine pairing was an absolute win for 6 glasses. All-in, we spent less than US$2k, which is a steal compared to other Michelin restaurants that don’t even crack our top 10 favorites.
This was an experience we will never forget- though we will continue to journey the world searching for a restaurant to top Suhring- I just don’t think it will happen anytime soon.
